Die 22. <a href="Commonwealth_Games" title="Commonwealth Games">Commonwealth Games</a> fanden vom 28. Juli bis zum 8. August 2022 in der <a href="England" title="England">englischen</a> Stadt <a href="Birmingham" title="Birmingham">Birmingham</a>, <a href="Vereinigtes_K%C3%B6nigreich" title="Vereinigtes Königreich">Vereinigtes Königreich</a>, statt, nachdem dem ursprünglichen Austragungsort <a href="Durban" title="Durban">Durban</a> in <a href="S%C3%BCdafrika" title="Südafrika">Südafrika</a> die Austragung entzogen wurde.<a href="#cite_note-1">[1]</a> Es waren die dritten Commonwealth Games, die in England stattfanden und die siebten im Vereinigten Königreich.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading3"><h3 id="Erstvergabe_2015">Erstvergabe 2015</h3></div>

Im September 2015 wurden die Commonwealth Games 2022 an die südafrikanische Stadt Durban vergeben. Im Februar 2017 erklärte der südafrikanische Sportminister <a href="Fikile_Mbalula" title="Fikile Mbalula">Fikile Mbalula</a>, dass die Regierung die Einstellung ihrer finanziellen Unterstützung der Spiele erwäge: „Wir können nicht über unsere Verhältnisse leben.“<a href="#cite_note-sport1-032022-2">[2]</a> Wenige Wochen später wurde bekannt, dass Durban die Anforderungen der Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) nicht erfüllen kann.<a href="#cite_note-co-170313-3">[3]</a> Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren 83 Millionen Euro in den Ausbau von Sportstätten geflossen. Die Eröffnung war für den 18. Juli 2022 geplant gewesen, den Geburtstag von <a href="Nelson_Mandela" title="Nelson Mandela">Nelson Mandela</a>.<a href="#cite_note-sport1-032022-2">[2]</a> Es wären die ersten Commonwealth Games in Afrika gewesen.

Die Vergabe der Spiele an Durban wurde von der CGF zurückgezogen, und es wurden alternative Kandidaten gesucht.<a href="#cite_note-sport1-032022-2">[2]</a>

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading3"><h3 id="Zweitvergabe_2017">Zweitvergabe 2017</h3></div>

Mit Stand April 2017 hatten neben <a href="Toronto" title="Toronto">Toronto</a><a href="#cite_note-4">[4]</a><a href="#cite_note-5">[5]</a>, <a href="Edmonton" title="Edmonton">Edmonton</a><a href="#cite_note-6">[6]</a> (war auch Kandidat der Erstvergabe) und <a href="Victoria_(Australien)" title="Victoria (Australien)">Victoria</a><a href="#cite_note-7">[7]</a> in <a href="Kanada" title="Kanada">Kanada</a> auch <a href="Liverpool" title="Liverpool">Liverpool</a>, <a href="London" title="London">London</a>, <a href="Manchester" title="Manchester">Manchester</a> und Birmingham im Vereinigten Königreich<a href="#cite_note-UK_Cities_Bid-8">[8]</a> sowie <a href="Sydney" title="Sydney">Sydney</a>, <a href="Melbourne" title="Melbourne">Melbourne</a>, <a href="Adelaide" title="Adelaide">Adelaide</a> und <a href="Perth" title="Perth">Perth</a> in <a href="Australien" title="Australien">Australien</a><a href="#cite_note-9">[9]</a> und <a href="Kuala_Lumpur" title="Kuala Lumpur">Kuala Lumpur</a> in <a href="Malaysia" title="Malaysia">Malaysia</a><a href="#cite_note-10">[10]</a> Bewerbungen in Aussicht gestellt. Ende September 2017 wurde bestätigt, dass Birmingham offiziell als Großbritanniens Bewerberstadt um die Ausrichtung der Commonwealth Games 2022 ins Rennen geht.<a href="#cite_note-11">[11]</a> Am 21. Dezember 2017 wurde bekannt gegeben, dass Birmingham die £750 Millionen teuren Spiele ausrichtet.<a href="#cite_note-12">[12]</a> Das <a href="Alexander_Stadium" title="Alexander Stadium">Alexander Stadium</a> wurde zu diesem Zweck erweitert. Zu den Commonwealth Games standen 30.000 Plätze zur Verfügung. Nach dem Rückbau verfügte es über 18.000 Plätze.<a href="#cite_note-13">[13]</a>

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Sportarten">Sportarten</h2></div>

Auf dem Programm standen 20 Sportarten. Es wurde eine neue Charter der Commonwealth umgesetzt, die neben den bisherigen zehn Kernsportarten (<a href="Badminton" title="Badminton">Badminton</a>, <a href="Bowls" title="Bowls">Bowls</a>, <a href="Boxen" title="Boxen">Boxen</a>, <a href="Gewichtheben" title="Gewichtheben">Gewichtheben</a>, <a href="Hockey" title="Hockey">Hockey</a>, <a href="Leichtathletik" title="Leichtathletik">Leichtathletik</a>, <a href="Netball" title="Netball">Netball</a>, <a href="Siebener-Rugby" title="Siebener-Rugby">Siebener-Rugby</a>, <a href="Squash" title="Squash">Squash</a> und <a href="Schwimmen" title="Schwimmen">Schwimmen</a>) fünf weitere hinzufügte (<a href="Judo" title="Judo">Judo</a>, <a href="Ringen" title="Ringen">Ringen</a>, <a href="Stra%C3%9Fenradsport" title="Straßenradsport">Straßenradsport</a>, <a href="Tischtennis" title="Tischtennis">Tischtennis</a> und <a href="Triathlon" title="Triathlon">Triathlon</a>).

Umstritten war der Ausschluss von <a href="Sportschiessen" class="mw-redirect" title="Sportschiessen">Schießen</a>, das seit 1966 im Programm war, woraufhin Indien mit einem Boykott der Spiele drohte.<a href="#cite_note-14">[14]</a> Es erfolgte eine Einigung, dass Indien die Schieß- und Bogenschieß-Wettbewerbe in einem separaten Wettbewerb in <a href="Chandigarh" title="Chandigarh">Chandigarh</a> austragen würde, die jedoch auf Grund der <a href="COVID-19-Pandemie" title="COVID-19-Pandemie">COVID-19-Pandemie</a> abgesagt werden mussten.<a href="#cite_note-15">[15]</a><a href="#cite_note-16">[16]</a>

Im August 2019 wurde festgelegt, dass Frauen-<a href="Cricket" title="Cricket">Cricket</a> im <a href="Twenty20" title="Twenty20">Twenty20</a>-Format dabei sein wird.<a href="#cite_note-17">[17]</a>
